Frequently Asked Questions

What's the best flooring for a loft?

While the choice of flooring is a matter of personal preference, hardwood is one of the most popular choices for loft flooring. When comparing a tile floor vs. wood floor, for example, the color and texture of wood brings an inviting warmth to the large open spaces of a loft dwelling. And when comparing hardwood vs. laminate floors, hardwood offers a highly durable, long-lasting and timeless surface that will hold its value for decades. Depending on the surface over which loft flooring is installed, engineered hardwood may perform better than solid hardwood.

What is wide plank loft flooring?

Wide plank flooring is made with floorboards that are up to 20" wide and up to 12' long. That's much wider and longer than standard commercial flooring, which is typically 3" wide and 3' long. With far fewer seams in the floor, wide plank flooring helps a room to feel more luxurious and spacious. And because wider planks allow the personality of the wood to be revealed, wide plank floors can help to create a stunning surface that is often the centerpiece of a loft's interior design.

What is engineered hardwood flooring?

Engineered boards are made with multiple layers of material that are glued together. The top layer is a veneer of hardwood while the backing layers may be made of plywood or fiberboard. The way that engineered boards are constructed allows them to perform better in areas with higher levels of moisture and relative humidity. Engineered flooring is ideal for basement floors, wine cellar flooring and sunroom flooring, for example.

Can solid or engineered loft flooring be distressed?

Yes. While dirty top Pine flooring, barnwood ceilings and other reclaimed hardwood surfaces are extremely popular in lofts, the cost can be prohibitive for some homeowners. Distressed floors offer a way to achieve the same appearance at a fraction of the cost. With a distressed or textured floor, craftsmen use a variety of methods to make new floorboards look like vintage or antique boards. Distressing techniques include adding saw kerfs and other marks to the board to recreate the look of planks that were cut at early sawmills. And certain wire-brush techniques can wear away the softer grain from new planks in the same way that time, weather and foot traffic wear down floors over decades or centuries.

Can I order prefinished engineered loft flooring?

Yes. When you order your loft flooring to be prefinished, your floor will arrive having been already finished at our manufacturing facility. Not only can a prefinished floor be installed more quickly, it will spare you the mess and inconvenience of having your floor sanded, stained and sealed inside your home.
