Welcome to Surface, a blog by Carlisle Wide Plank Floors. Join us in discussion about hardwood flooring wood grains & styles, home decor, green building products, trends and more.

A customer in Pennsylvania sent us these shots of his recently installed Antique Milled Barnwood, which he tells us has “sentimental value” for him. John Cassimatis has been working with Carlisle for a few years and now plans another floor in Antique Oak.

We should all be so lucky as the boat housed in this boat house. What a place to be! Check out the photo album below to see what a Michigan family did with Carlisle’s premium wide plank flooring in Longleaf Heart Pine, 6-inch and 8-inch widths, prefinished with Amber.
The floor is a perfect shimmering complement to the wooden boat housed below. Many of our customers come to use with concerns about moisture and wood floors. No worries here! Our durable wood flooring can be applied beyond a house on terra ferma to a boat house over water.

Jason Wolfe, an associate in our Los Angeles Design Center, got these great photos from Priya Garcia, a designer he recently worked with in creating the floors for a new vacation “dream home” for a family in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Garcia had visited the Design Center and “fell in love” with Carlisle’s floors and so, when the opportunity came up with this project, she knew Carlisle floors would be the perfect match.

Three rooms in the vacation home were all finished the same way, with our antique Eastern White Pine, distressed with Carlisle’s custom Hit-or-Miss treatment and done in 8- to 12-inch widths. All were then finished with our Gingerbread Stain and Tung oil. The primary wall in the living room (below) is finished with Carlisle’s 400-year-old reclaimed brown barn siding.
Jason says this is the type of project he really loves to work on because he can see the vision of the client transformed into reality, step by step. “For this one, we had players on both sides of the Rocky Mountains involved!”

Carlisle has partnered with cabinetmakers Jewett Farms for some time now, with Carlisle’s floors underfoot in their design studios. Now we’re also working together to put on a series of educational forums, Architect Nights, that are eligible for continuing education credits with The American Institute of Architects and the American Society of Interior Designers. The sessions include installing our wide plank floors over radiant heat, green building techniques and reclaimed wood.
We held our first such Jewett/Carlisle event on September 9, with about 15 architects, designers and builders joining us. Randy Willard of New England Warmboard, a radiant heat company, was one of our presenters. Attendees also learned about Carlisle’s process of harvesting the trees that make our floors, plus air drying and milling the boards.
More presentations are planned on “All Things Green” for November 11, 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Jewett Farms Studio in Newburyport, Massachusetts. Another will be February 3, 2010, when the topic will be antique woods and presented by our own Mark Nichols of the Carlisle New England Deisgn Team here in Stoddard, New Hampshire.

Green building and home design and all its possibilities are the focus of the Green by Design Open House hosted by ABODE Builders of New England October 10 in Plymouth, New Hampshire. Anyone with some ideas for building their dream home or remodeling their current home in an environmentally friendly way should attend and learn from some of New England’s best experts in green building—including Carlisle of course. Architects, real estate agents and anyone who wants to think green may benefit.
The event is 1 to 4 p.m. Directions to the Abode location are here.
“We’ll have some of the green home building industry’s top talent on hand and help people get started on the path of building their dream home the right way,” says Jason Maring of ABODE Builders.
Hickory in Design Center:
Carlisle’s Tim Buckley will be on hand giving a demonstration, plus answering questions, showing samples and offering catalogs. Carlisle and Abode have been working together for the past two years, since Abode was launched. Visitors at the Green by Design Open House will see Carlisle’s 4-to-8-inch Antique Hickory floor (above), which is installed in the Abode Design Center, and our 4- to 8-inch pre-finished Antique Oak in the on-site, award-winning model home (below).
Oak in model home:
The event’s organizers at Abode say they hope it will help educate consumers on green design and building technologies and help them feel comfortable with the building process, which can be daunting to contemplate. Abode is a full-service, custom architectural home design and build firm.
The event includes demonstrations by New England’s top green experts in architectural, interior, kitchen and landscape design. Representatives from Crown Point Cabinetry (another Carlisle partner), Design East Interiors and Andrews Construction, along with award-winning architect Elise Stone, will be on-hand to talk about the benefits of green design and energy efficient living.

And, it’s not just about floors and green design. The event wraps up with live music and a barbecue. And note, on Columbus Day weekend, this beautiful corner of New England comes alive with fall foliage—the perfect excuse for a daytrip into New Hampshire’s countryside.
