5 Home Décor Tips to Cool Down in the Summer Heat

Share Share this post

It’s no surprise that temperatures are certainly starting to heat up. You might be jumping from the air conditioner of your office, to your car, then to your home. When you reach the home front, you want your home to be cool and comfortable. But not everyone wants to install an air conditioner in their home. Today, we’ll show you some fun ways to cool down your home décor, no air conditioner required.

Find the Right Colors

Depending on where you live you may be dealing with hot temperatures just a few months a year, or all year long. But no matter how long it’s hot at your house, one of the best ways to cool down your home décor is to change the color scheme in your room.

It seems like there is always a cool breeze blowing when you are at the beach, so why not find some inspiration from the sandy shore; earth tones of the sandy beach, crisp white of the ocean waves, and gray and blue of an endless ocean.

You may not want to modify your entire color scheme for summer, so instead, just swap out simple items like linens, and pillows.

White sheer curtains are a great way to lighten, and brighten, up a room.

Or replace your dining room chairs with slipcovers in a lighter, summer shade.

Controlling Outdoor Elements

You know your home better than anyone; this includes where the sun hits your home during the day or where it can catch the best breeze. You can design your home around these natural elements.

To keep your home cool, try these tips:

  • Keep windows and curtains closed when the sun hits your home the most to minimize hot temperatures and solar exposure.
  • Use Blinds or Roller Shades to control sunlight and airflow throughout the day
  • Install fans with intake and exhaust settings so you can adjust the air flow throughout the day to get rid of hot air, or bring in cool air
  • Station your fans strategically around dining, living and bedrooms areas – the spaces you are most likely to use when the heat is at its peak
  • IFocus on light colors blinds and window shades so they reflect the heat rather than attract it
  • nstall liners behind your curtains, many can be installed on a timer and/or remotely so you can easily control them even when you aren’t home
  • Apply a window tint which can reduce UV rays, and minimize heat • Install ceiling fans
  • Maximize air flow with open windows

Set Up an Outdoor Dining Area

If its hot outside, the last thing you want to do is turn on the oven. So look for an outdoor space where you can set up a grill, and an outdoor dining area. This will keep the house cool, and as the sun sinks, and the temperatures cool down, you can enjoy a refreshing meal outside.

Cool Down When You Turn In

When it is time to turn in for the night, there is nothing worse than being uncomfortably hot.

There are a few updates you can make to your sleeping quarters to keep bedrooms, yourself, and your guests, cool.

Use a Chillow at night to keep your cool. Or sleep like an Egyptian, and put a slightly damp sheet over yourself when you go to bed.

Focus on white beddings and linens. Cotton, especially Egyptian cotton, makes for a comfortable fabric for summer sleeping

You also want to replace your incandescent bulbs with fluorescents, which emit up to 75% less heat.  If you are installing new flooring, consider wood floors over carpet.  It will keep you, and your rooms so much coolor.  In the cooler months, you can easily install a small area rug, instead of having carpet down year round.

If you don’t already have one, install a ceiling fan, and turn it on counter clockwise so the air blows down at you.  It will feel like heaven on a hot night.
