Design Boards - California Love
We are feeling a lot of "California Love" for our featured home in today's "Design Boards".
And you can understand why once you see the subtle infusions of color and modern array of furniture and lighting
As if often the case with the custom homes that we work on, the interior design details are the envy of the office. So let's check out some of our finds!
This modern, open-concept flat has a nice, big open kitchen, living room and dining room. To give the spaces some definition the modern stainless steel stairway separates the dining room from the living room, and a sizeable island does the same into the kitchen - with a spacious breakfast bar.
The living room is our primary focus, as it has many great details, some of which you might not have expected in a modern home like this!
The three primary pieces of furniture in this room are the sectional corner sofa made from silver leather; sculptured coffee table, and purple armless lounge chair.
Finding a sofa with the rounded front detail is not easy. But thanks to the January 2014 issue of Architectural Digest that just showed up yesterday, I was introduced to Roche-Bobois, a modern, French furniture company.
Their Ovalis Modular Corner Sofa is a great match. The side detail is slightly different, and I'm still waiting to hear from the designer if it's available in the silver color. As with most custom furniture makers, all you need do is ask, and it can probably happen.
The sculptured coffee table has a unique surface because it is not flat, like a traditional coffee table and it has a slightly rustic wrought iron base. It is hard to tell whether the top surface is wood, laminate, or some kind of dark bronze metal. If you like the sculpted design the Eames® Molded Plywood Coffee Table might be for you. I found it on Design Within Reach (which if you don't know, is a fabulous modern furnishings company started by Rob Forbes in 1999).
If you like the bronze/metal more than check out the Mercer Table from Restoration Hardware.
The chair is another unique piece in the room. Its high back, armless design, and wide seating area is representative of today's modern furniture styling. But it is hard to find chairs with the smooth fabric, in that plum color.
If you can settle for a similarly modern design, albeit with arms these wing chairs are for you. They are created by Denmark furniture maker Carl Hansen, and designed by Hans J Wegner.
A custom floor lamp, like you see here makes a statement, especially in a big open room like this. With its 3-tier approach and yellow paper shades, it gives the room a nice pop of color. It is also very hard to replicate. The closest I came was with a Sonneman Cylinder Floor Lamp, that I uncovered on AllModern.
Now you know as a wood flooring company, we can't forget the floors. After they are one of the largest design elements in the room. And when you decide to change your style, your furniture, or your paint color, the floors will remain.
Despite the modern feel of this space, the floor is reclaimed wood flooring. This floor is made from Reclaimed Oak.
There are two ways to finish floors, one is with an oil based product. This darkens the floor and gives it a more golden appearance. That wouldn't quite work for this space. So instead the clients chose a Clear Matte finish. This highlighted the natural colors of the wood, giving it an unfinished appearance, without darkening the floor.
