Design Boards - Modern Cooking Kitchen

Kitchens are one of the most important rooms of the home. And it can be a lot of fun to design!

So in this segment in our blog series "Design Boards" we are looking at a spectacular kitchen from Michael Nash Design Build & Homes in Fairfax, Virginia.

There are so many great aesthetic and functional details to this kitchen design.  We've discovered some great products to help you recreate the look.

Dark Wood Floors and Engineered Wood Flooring from Carlisle Wide Plank Floors

When you first look at the kitchen the most striking detail is the balance of color and character throughout the space.  It has a very complementary color pallet as you move from the range of chocolate, cocoa, greys, and white tones throughout the room.  The refrigerator plays off the bar stools, the backsplash combines the colors of the cabinets, and dark wood flooring, and the stainless steel detail is a dominant, but not overpowering, design detail.

Cabinets are always a major design element in a kitchen and the major kitchen cabinets are beautiful cocoa grey color, with a dark island - a very common practice in most kitchens today. We found a custom cabinet company with door styles and finishes that might be a great match.

The Venice style doors from DureSupreme Cabinets offer the raised panel and artistic edge detail from the cabinets shown.

DuraSupreme Cabinets offer a variety of standard and custom colors, but the Caraway/Charcoal Cherry offers a nice chocolate/grey tone the primary cabinets.

The Peppercorn Cherry works great for Island, recreating the dark chocolate tone, giving it some contrast.

The countertops provide a crisp, clean surface for eating, preparing or entertaining.  And it helps offset the darker tones throughout the space in the cabinets, island and dark wood floors.  The Classico Collection from Caesar Stone offers countertops in this same kind of crisp white color.

The hard surfaces in this room work so well together.  Throughout the room you have dark wood floors made from Wide Plank Walnut.  Walnut is a naturally dark wood, so you don't need a stain to achieve that warm color.  When it comes to a floor like this you can finish it with an oil based on finish which will make the floor even darker, or you can finish it with a clear finish that leaves the floor with more cocoa tones, with subtle caramel along the edges.   The clear finish was the best fit for this finish.

On the kitchen walls backsplash in this kitchen seems to tie all the colors together beautifully.  It would probably be easy to find a matching tile locally but in case you need some help we came across the Glass Tile Store.  Their Earthy Collection features a cafe-au-lait product that has the same cocoa, cream and dark brown tones.

And as you move into the dining area there is a natural transition into a simple, and light wall color that works well with the large windows to introduce natural light, and help give the space an open feel.

The Natural Wicker color from Benjamin Moore seems like a very good fit, with its subtle undertone but overall light color.   You can explore their entire color gallery to find the right color for your space.

Another fashionable element is the somewhat vintage back-less bar stools.  We found an almost perfect match from Restoration Hardware in a nearly identical color with the Remy Backless Stool.

And last but not least, we have to draw attention to the stainless steel detail.  There is a lovely stove hiding behind the island, we wish we could have gotten a better look at that!  Then there are the stainless steel cabinet hardware, the lighting fixture above the dining room table and island, and of course the refrigerator.  The lighting above the island has an industrial feel that goes well with the barstools.  We found the Paullette Pendant Lamp from PureModern.com.  The diameter is a bit smaller, and the finish is a bit shinier, but that is the only drawback.

The refrigerator appears to be larger than a standard one, so you would want to look at appliance makers like Sub-Zero and their Pro-48 series, or the GE Monogram collection.  One option that is a bit smaller, but incorporates some new smudge-proof technology, is from Frigidaire.
