Design Boards - Modern Oceanfront Living Room

In the next segment in our new series "Design Boards" we roll back the clock to a great project, and a beautiful waterfront home along the coast of Maine by DiStefano Architects.

It is no surprise that modern design is here to stay, and this home is the epitome of modern design.   And it's interior is just as striking as its exterior design.  This architectural masterpiece came to life facing many natural and man made challenges from zoning laws to landscape restructions.

Uncovering the right products to recreate the look from this home was a challenge - for all you homeowners and designers out there who saw this in the Maine Home & Design Magazine, and may have been struggling to find the right products - we hope this gives you some ideas!

WALLS & CEILINGS

The walls and ceilings of this modern home vary from room to room.  In the living room you'll find venetian plaster.  The dining room has a marble-like design in a warm copper color pallet. You'll find crisp white and and cream tones throughout the secondary halls and bedrooms.

If you are looking to create a marbled look on your walls HGTV has a great video to walk you through the process.

You can also get some great ideas on Faux Finishes from from Sherwin Williams.  Select the type of faux finish you want to create and it will help you estimate project timeline, and outline all the tools you need.

Wood Flooring

When it came to the design of this home using local products was important to the homeowners.  They chose wide plank White Maple flooring.  This floor, like the interior decor, has a crisp, clean look.  Unlike oak wood flooring, which has a strong grain, maple hardwood flooring will have a very smooth grain.  And unlike rustic flooring this floor was graded to have very few knots to maintain the modern look.  The light golden tones of the maple flooring offer a complementary backdrop for every room, not matter what color scheme was used.

Another surprising architectural flooring detail is the use of all 10" wide boards.  Wider boards simplify the design of the room because you have less seams in the floor.  They also make a room look larger - a great design feature for the long, narrow Kitchen and Living Room space; or they fit the scale of the room well - in the case of the large bedroom areas.

Furniture

The furniture was the most fun - and the most challenging to research - after all modern furniture takes many shapes and forms and the details are important.

For the coffee table, we found this Pilot Square Coffee Table at InMod.  The detail under the table doesn't match, but you would be surprised how difficult it is to find a silver coffee table without the added detail or embellishment.  If you find one send it our way!

For the end tables we found the Johnston Casual Modulus End Table from a great site - allmodern.com that we recently discovered in Dwell magazine.

The contemporary high back white chair also presented a challenge,  I believe the white chairs in this home had some custom work done to create the pillow and "skirt" detail around the bottom - but custom furniture in a custom home is very common.  We hope these beauties from Houzz might provide a suitable alternative:

For the couch we turned to an old favorite Restoration Hardware.

We're thinking the perfect color in Flax in Belgian Linen....

...or how about Velvet.

Not surprisingly the gray seating element in this room was also a challenge to find a suitable replica.  Not only is it difficult to search for because it doesn't appear a name - ottoman, chaise lounge, couch?  But most seating moduls seemed to be two-piece, whereas we want to recreate the clean, one piece construction.

We found this lovely piece also on Inmod. The thinking was buy two and set them together to complete the look.

We also love the black granite fireplace - it's the perfect accent to this modern home.  Polished black granite was used throughout this house on the counters and fireplace.  Be sure to look around for a local supplier to get the look you are going for.

What are you favorite products from the home?  Do you have any product ideas to replicate what you are seeing in the home?
