Family Rooms - Function & Design Ideas

Family rooms come in a variety of styles and each is meant to be a place to relax, a santuary from the stresses of the day. Some of these rooms such as photo 1 to the right can be light and airy but provide a quiet place to gather with family and friends. The raised ceilings painted white, dark hardwood floors and the large amount of natural light from the windows give you a feel of being outdoors yet within the comforts of inside your home.

Other family rooms, like photo 2 on the left, are more contained and given the smaller space, the placement and type of furnishings is a bit more critical. You want to have a warm comfortable feeling but not to the point of being crowded which to some would be un welcoming.

In photo 3 this space has combined a great many features. There is the abundance of natural light and the open, raised ceiling imparts a larger space with the massive stone chimney being the focal point that anchors the entire room.

Everyone has their own style and that is a natural and wonderful thing. The setting here in photo 4 is simple and through the use of leather chairs, hardwood floors, the fireplace and cushions, it imparts the feeling of having a wonderful afternoon coffee or tea while enjoying a the warmth of the fireplace.

No matter what type of style or design you have in mind for your Family Room you can definately achieve it with proper space planning and interior design coordination as well as understanding how you want the space to function for your home.
