How to Mix Wood Flooring Styles & Colors To Create a Custom Look

Let’s face it…too much of the same thing can easily become boring, especially when it comes to decorating and interior design.

That’s why there’s a trend away from the monotony of “matchy-matchy” décor themes, including the wood flooring. The modern approach focuses on individual spaces to take into account how they will be used, what furnishings will go in them and the mood you want to project. Speaking of furnishings, at least some rooms in every home feature a somewhat eclectic mix of furniture, personal articles, art and more, including items with a sentimental attachment. The idea is to have the flooring in each specific space work together with all these varied elements. Sometimes it is a new floor altogether, otherwise, it is a small modification in the design to better suit the room. Whatever the case may be, selecting more than one style of wide plank flooring can be amazingly beautiful and captivating — not to mention unique!

Plank Width: Size Does Matter

Wide plank floors make any space seem more open to reducing the number of seams and showcasing more of the natural beauty of the wood. The larger the space, the wider the planks should be to keep the seams at a minimum. Typically, the direction of the planks will align with the longest side of the space.

Color: From Light to Dark and Shades of Gray.

Lighter hues (ex: Cloud 9, from our Casual Collection) reflect natural light to make a room feel airy and bright, such as a family room or eat-in kitchen. Darker tones (ex: Cup of Joe from our Essential Collection) can make a space feel more intimate and either cozy, as in a study, or formal, as in a dining room or living room.

Contrast can also play an interesting role in style, like combining dark wood floors with white cabinets in a kitchen. Of course, there is the ever popular gray, the ultimate “neutral” color (ex: Moonlight from our Urban collection) that goes with just about everything depending on the shade.

When picking a floor color, keep in mind the undertone of the furnishings, cabinets, and trim, so that they will complement each other.Dark Wood Flooring & Walnut Flooring from Carlisle Wide Plank Floors

Style: From Rustic to Contemporary Under the Same Roof

You can vary the wood style based on a room’s function and the mood you want to create. For example, you might want a rustic style of white oak floor from our Retreat Collection to create a relaxed feeling of escape for a game room or den. On the other end of the spectrum, you could choose a more modern style of white oak from either our Traditional Collection for your main living areas.

You can also mix plank and herringbone white oak engineered hardwood flooring from either our Studio or Manhattan Collection in various ways to highlight spaces such a kitchen, entry or gallery hallway.

Normally, contiguous open spaces work best with the same flooring to help tie them together, while using furniture groupings and area rugs to separate spaces, such as family room and dining area. Another option, as discussed previously, is to use plank and herringbone styles in similar woods and colors to highlight specific spaces. Otherwise, a threshold provides the ideal opportunity to change color, style, type or direction.

Also, when transitioning between colors, make sure they are different enough so that it’s obvious that it’s intentional and not a mistake.
