Update your Kitchen

Are ready for a complete overhaul of your current kitchen to create the culinary space you’ve always dreamed of?  Or is your kitchen just in need of a light makeover?

Kitchen remodels will continue to be popular in 2014.  If you are looking to completely remodel your kitchen the best place to start is by finding the right professional to guide you through design, planning and selection.  One of the best places to start is with the National Kitchen & Bath Association.  Their website offers design tools, inspiration gallery, and an industry directory.

A major kitchen remodel may not be in your sights for 2014.  It is a time-consuming and costly investment. Remodeling Magazine reports that the average major kitchen remodel can cost about $107,406!  But you can update your kitchen without the expense of a major overhaul.  Here are 4 ways:

1) Update your countertops.  Wood countertops and butcher blocks will be popular in 2014.  You can use antique wood to make a rustic looking countertop or use a dark wood, like Walnut to make something more refined.  If wood is not your first choice, don’t worry there are many different options.  Granite and soapstone are always popular.  Porcelain and even concrete can be used for countertops. While exploring your options keep in mind all of them will be made from natural products – which can mean color variation and natural characteristics – so make sure you have the right expectations of the product you choose.  Samples are a great way to verify this.

2) Install new Prefinished Hardwood Flooring.  Chances are if you are updating your kitchen, you are going to live there while you do it.  Don’t further complicate your life with a wood floor that needs to be finished on site.  Order a prefinished hardwood floor and complete your job is half the time!  In 2014 natural wood floors in light, gray, and tan colors will be very popular.  Oak wood floors like those in the Carlisle Premier Collection will be sure to please.

3) Install new Faucets.  Faucets come in variety of finishes including bronze, stainless steel and chrome.  In 2014 touchless faucets will continue to be popular.  They are available from a variety of manufacturers like Kohler, Moen, and Delta.  Consumer Reports has some helpful information if you are in the market for touchless faucets.

4) Install a Backsplash.   Adding a backsplash to your kitchen is a great way to personalize and update your kitchen.  You can make it look more urban and contemporary with metal tiles, adds some sophistication with color, or add some color with a tile combination of your choice.  Check out this helpful site from HGTV with ideas, videos and more!

Check back tomorrow, we will discuss Resolution #2 – the home office!  Love it or hate, it’s hear to stay so why not make the best of it.

Do you have plans to update or remodel your kitchen? Where did you start? What ideas do you have?
