Make Space for the Home Office

For many people the lines between the office and the home have become very gray.  And according to Forbes magazine nearly one third of all American are freelancers, and they will surpass full-time employees in the next 6 years.

We are all immersed in tablets, laptops, Wi-Fi and remote desktop connections that make plugging into our office easier than ever.  The Home Real Estate site Zillow predicts it will be one of the most popular rooms for homeowners to tackle in 2014.  Rather than toiling away at your kitchen table, why not find a space to create a home office.

The average home office project costs about $27,292, according to Remodeling Magazine.  But before you apply for a home equity loan, or pause your project altogether, let’s stop and think “space planning”, and consider the under-used space already in the home.

Do you have an eat-in kitchen? How often do you really use that dining room? Is there an underused closet?

Do you have an unfinished or partially finished basement?  Watch this video from HGTV and see how a family’s lower level went from sensory overload to functional.
Also consider that underutilized guest bedroom. This is an ideal location for your home office.  And when you install a tasteful murphy bed you can still meet the needs of visitors.
If you haven’t got the space inside your home, why not find a space outside the home like this 92 square office from Sett Studio Home Builders.

Once you decide WHERE your office will be it is time to start planning for how it will function and the overall aesthetics.  There are 5 major components to consider when designing your home office.

  1. Desk Space and Selection
  2. Wall Space Utilization
  3. Lighting
  4. Construction/Architecture (including noise reduction)

#5 is the interior decor and for 2014 you might find these tasteful trends in home office:

Vintage Furniture

The Real Estate website zillow.com surveyed several interior designers recently.  Their findings, vintage furniture is finding its way into the home office.  Desks no longer need to be behomoth work stations capable of storing the desktop computer.  The laptop, tablet, wireless printers and other devices make it so desks can be practical and pretty.

The gray and neutral colors are also popular among designers in 2014, according to Zillow.   In a recent survey interior designer Michelle Workman Interiors said they are “soothing and non-distracting effect” ideal for a productive workspace”.

If you like the gray colors you have a few combinations.  You can use gray interior wall colors with dark wood floors like this office from Wendy Design Group.

Or you can use gray wood floors with light, neutral colors on the wall.  Oak wood flooring in Grey Flannel from the new Carlisle Premier collections might be a good fit.
