Scraping the surface and edges of the plank by hand takes true skill and a thorough knowledge of how the earliest floors in New England were crafted.
In those days, logs were sawn in the widest widths and longest lengths that could most efficiently be cut from old growth timber. Craftsmen then used a hand tool to draw the surface of the boards to smooth the roughness. This method of planing resulted in a more natural surface texture.

Today, our milling technique is much more precise and each plank is finished to the smoothest surface possible. We replicate the hand-drawn look of old by gently scraping the edges and surface of each board by hand with a tool very similar to the one used by early New England craftsmen. What's more, we can tailor the degree of variation to suit your tastes-from a very rustic look to a softer, more time-worn appearance.
