Crafting a Carlisle Floor

Every Carlisle floor is a custom floor — made expressly for you and your home after a thorough and thoughtful process that includes helpful suggestions and ongoing support from your Carlisle Sales Representative, whose job it is to make sure that you get the floor that you want.

When we say that we craft our floors one board at a time, that’s exactly what we mean. First, each board has been selectively sawn from the heart of the tree so that it contains the densest and most beautiful vertical grain. This heartwood also ensures maximum stability, i.e., boards that won’t cup or twist. After a two-stage curing process, the boards arrive at our mill, where our woodworking craftsmen will scrutinize each one in order to determine which side better represents the full potential of the board. The other side will be milled with stress reliefs in order to further increase the board’s stability once installed.

Before beginning the final milling of any new floor project, we sharpen our planing tools, which helps our state-of-the-art machines mill the boards to such smooth tolerances that they won’t require sanding before installation.

Each board will then once again be subjected to the critical eyes of our craftsmen. If they find any flaws or imperfections after milling, that board will be discarded and recycled for other use.

If your floor is to be prefinished or be further nuanced with one or more of our handmade surface treatments, the boards will then go to The Carlisle Custom Shop for final finishing.
