Found in old buildings from New England to the Canadian border, Antique Ash is somewhat similar to Oak but features a more consistent blend of golden-brown coloration.

Sewn mainly from supporting beams, this reclaimed wood’s tight, dense grain has few nail holes, saw kerfs or watermarks, so it has a more formal look and less rustic character than do most antique woods. And because of Ash’s unique elasticity, it is an excellent choice for radiant heat and concrete slab installations – or anywhere humidity is a factor.

Overview

American Chestnut trees were the giants of the Eastern forests until a tragic blight all but wiped them out in the early 1900s. Their tremendous girth yielded amazingly wide boards that are today reclaimed from old farmhouses, barns, outbuildings and commercial buildings from Canada to Georgia.

This wood features rich light brown to darker cocoa coloration, with prominent grain and unique wormhole character caused by bugs that ate the dying trees. An extinct and finite resource that makes a truly remarkable — and uniquely American — floor.

Overview

This is the original floor of colonial times, cut from virgin timber that yielded extraordinary lengths and widths.

Antique Eastern White Pine has a rich, aged patina that contains subtle gold, amber and pumpkin hues giving it its nickname “Pumpkin Pine.” A less rustic choice than our milled barnwood, it still contains occasional nail holes, wormholes, saw kerfs and watermarks. A gorgeous one-of-a-kind floor that will continue to gain character as it “wears in.”

Overview

Elm was a popular building material all along the Eastern United States and up to the Canadian border, where it flourished until the arrival of Dutch Elm Disease in the 1960s. Now Elm is being reclaimed from the same areas.

Antique Elm is a very unique and clean-looking floor with a dramatic grain structure and figuring similar to Hickory. Gold, brown and auburn hues weave throughout the boards, which also contain occasional nail holes, saw kerfs and watermarks. An instant center of interest and conversation piece!

Overview

Antique Longleaf Heart Pine floor has been reclaimed from the portions of old buildings that have taken the most wear and tear over the years: old floor boards or structural floor joists that we carefully clean, inspect and preserve with minimal milling.

The result is ‘Grandpa’s Floor’ — a “reborn” floor whose original primitive beauty was once covered up by ground-in dirt, debris and years of abuse. The aged blend of rich pumpkin and deep charcoal color tones is amplified by the original stains, watermarks and saw kerfs. Our most unique and rustic floor.

Overview

Because it was originally sawn from old-growth forests, Antique Heart Pine typically contains more heartwood with tighter vertical grain structure and fewer knots than newly sawn examples.

Antique Heart Pine’s classic rich orange, amber and pumpkin hues are complemented by occasional nail holes, wormholes, saw kerfs and watermarks to create a gorgeous one-of-a-kind floor. Overview

Sustainably harvested in Indiana, Carlisle’s American Ash is an amazingly dense and durable wood with a unique elasticity. (It’s the traditional wood used for baseball bats.) These qualities also make Ash a great choice for radiant heat, concrete slab foundations or anywhere humidity is a factor.

From an aesthetic standpoint, Ash is prized for its interesting grain patterns and striking hues, from the cream-colored and light almond outer portions of the tree to the rich nutty brown heartwood. Natural or unstained, Ash offers a very sophisticated look with high impact resistance.

Overview

Long popular in premium cabinetry and millwork, Birch also has a unique flooring heritage in that it is extremely durable and has distinctive blends of lighter coloration. Each board has an intriguing combination of blonde outer edges and warm cherry-like center portions. Its varying grain patterns range from subtle swirls to highly figured flames. The result is a very unusual floor that is sure to become the focal point in any contemporary or traditional setting.

Carlisle Birch stands apart in that it typically contains more dramatic heartwood because it is sawn from fully mature trees grown and sustainably harvested in Northern New England.

Overview

This was the favored wood for many of the finest early American furniture and interior panels because it could be polished to a deep, glowing red. As a flooring material, Cherry is also unique in that as it ages, its lustrous hues will darken a bit more than will other hardwoods and will ultimately mature to a rich, burnished auburn color. The subtle but distinctive flowing grain patterns and uniquely inviting warmth make Cherry one of our most popular floors.

Carlisle Cherry comes to us exclusively from Pennsylvania, where outstanding examples of this hardwood are sustainably harvested.

Our Antique Oak is sourced from old buildings along the Ohio River Valley and in Western Pennsylvania.

Antique Oak is much sought-after for its eye-pleasing character: a strong, prominent grain and eclectic figuring, which includes occasional knots and unique swirls known as “tigering.” Colors range from gold to amber to rich nutty browns, which combine to reflect a distinguished Old World look that is further accented by a variety of nail holes, cracks, mineral streaks and saw kerfs.

Overview

Carlisle offers both White Maple and, on occasion or when requested, Brown Maple. They are merely different cuts taken from the same tree that produces maple syrup.

Brown Maple‘s rich contrasting grains are quite unique, and it is a shame that this outer cut of the tree is rarely used. While not technically heartwood, it still shares White Maple’s hardness, yet encompasses a completely different look. If you truly want something different, ask your Carlisle Representative about Brown Maple.

White Maple has long rivaled Oak in flooring popularity. Its clear flowing grains and occasional swirls make it quite a fashionable choice in a variety of traditional and contemporary settings. A very clean look.

Carlisle Maple is sustainably harvested in northern Michigan and can be stained to create a variety of impressive looks in any setting.

Most of today’s cheaper Red Oak strip flooring comes from warmer climates, where it grows too fast and produces an unattractive grain. This is truly unfortunate, because Red Oak that has been allowed to slowly mature in cooler climates produces a striking floor that can be as rustic or modern as you wish to make it. So if you think of Red Oak as being a bit “too common,” think again!

Carlisle’s Red Oak is sustainably harvested in the Northern Appalachians, where slow growth produces tight, consistent grain; maximum heartwood; and exceptional widths and lengths.

Overview

This is Carlisle’s most traditional floor and the original cornerstone of our business. It is cherished for its simple grains, subtle knots and exceptional widths and lengths. It is also unique in that, while extremely durable, it is a floor that “wears in” over the years to create an ongoing journal that reflects each family’s history and lifestyle.

Importantly, Carlisle’s Eastern White Pine floors are harder than many others because they are sustainably harvested in the cold climates of Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire, which produce tighter grain and more dense, vertical heartwood. Then, our two-stage drying process allows these wood fibers to thoroughly harden in a natural manner — something that kiln drying alone doesn’t accomplish. Finally, our recommended Custom Coat™ stains and topcoats are extremely durable and penetrate deep in the wood to create a more resilient finish that with minimal care will keep its rich patina for 20 years or more.

Stained or left natural, Eastern White Pine can take on many different looks in a variety of settings. It lends itself particularly well to our custom surface treatments such as hand-scraped, footworn and saw kerf — or face nailing with our authentic antique reproduction cut nails.

Overview

Both tremendously strong and widely available in much of the Southeast, Southern Longleaf or “Heart” Pine was the building material of choice for burgeoning factories, bridges, ship masts and flooring. Today, it has been rediscovered and can be seen in a variety of formal, traditional and rustic settings from coast to coast.

Our exclusive source for this very special wood is third-generation forester John Crosby of Bay Minette, Alabama. Like his father and grandfather before him, John allows his trees to grow slowly to full maturity before sustainably harvesting them. This produces more of the prized heart wood and wider boards, which are in turn sawn from the choicest portion of the log for maximum strength and beauty.

Even then, only one tree out of 5,000 will be hand-selected by John as a Carlisle tree.

Overview

With consistent light to grayish charcoal hues reminiscent of old European castle flooring, natural White Oak has long been a popular American Flooring choice. But White Oak’s unique grain also lends itself to further nuancing with a variety of darker stains and treatments.

For example, we can apply two different sawing techniques to White Oak, with eye-catching results. Quarter sawing produces the “rays” and “flecks” in the grain which are the hallmark of Mission furniture and cabinetry. Rift sawing is similar, but rather than flecks it produces an amazingly straight grain pattern quite unlike any other wood.
