Design Tips From The Carlisle's
Because these floors are so unique and special, we recommend using these patterns in special areas of your home such as an entry way, conservatory or library.
Early colonists in America favored wide
plank flooring, most likely because of the efficiencies found in both sawing and installing the wider boards. With so many things to do and so few resources, practicality, not design, was the driving force in the new settlements. However, during the early to mid 16th century in Europe, floors were taking a different direction.

Paralleling the Baroque Era, the wealthiest Europeans were beginning to view flooring
as an opportunity to reflect the art of the age. Craftsman began to use different species of wood, laid into patterns to create an almost 3D effect. Signature patterns developed that were especially designed by a certain craftsman for a particular castle. The less wealthy would “recreate” this look by painting the patterns on their wider plank floors, a tradition that carried over in the milk paint floors of Early America.

Eventually the signature patterns evolved into single wood types and certain more popular styles such “Versailles” became the most recognizable. Today Carlisle is proud to painstakingly recreate these patterns in the wood type that you feel is the most appropriate for your interior. By using the same high quality wood that we use in our plank floors we are able to create parquets that accurately recreate the grand floors that graced such places as the palace at Versailles.
