FSC Antique Certification

Long before “building green” became a popular movement, woodworkers, artists and craftsmen celebrated antique wood for what it is — a unique and time-worn journal where each board, like the pages of a book, has its own story to tell.

At Carlisle, we’re proud to be North America’s leading supplier of antique woods. But we’re even more proud to have been nationally recognized for the methods we use to responsibly recycle this finite resource.

The Forest Stewardship Council has set down hard and fast rules that strictly govern the way in which antique wood should properly be reclaimed, reprocessed and resold. And Carlisle has achieved full FSC certifications: FSC Chain of Custody for 100% Post-Consumer Reclaimed Antique Wood.

The former means that every single board has been proven to have had a full previous life cycle before being reclaimed for new usage — and therefore qualifies for LEED credits. A 100% certification is the most elite in the antique recycled wood category and contrasts sharply with other percentage ratings. For example a “30% Post-Consumer Certification” would mean less than one out of three boards can be traced to a previous life cycle. The other 70% could contain anything from questionably “antique” offerings to newly sawn materials.

FSC Chain of Custody Certification recognizes that from the moment we contract to carefully dismantle an old building that has been slated for demolition until the wood is re-processed and resold, it never leaves our care and supervision.

You, the customer, are the last link in this chain. You literally become the final custodian of a certified piece of history. To help our customers fully appreciate this, each of our reclaimed antique floors comes with a commemorative personalized folio, handmade in Vermont, that tells the complete history of the wood: where it was procured, the species it represents and the building it came from.
