3 Flooring Styles for a Modern Look
Wide plank floors and modern interior design go hand-in-hand, but that was not always the case. For a time, wide plank floors were more associated with terms like “rustic” and “country” and “pine.” Carlisle has reformed all those “non-believers” with a stunning showcase of wide plank floor designs that are perfect for today’s modern home.
If you are looking for inspiration for your next project, we’ll introduce you to three of our most popular species when a modern look is what you have in mind.
White Oak
“White Oak” is commonly mentioned in the flooring industry, but a Carlisle Wide Plank White Oak floor is anything but common looking. And it could be the perfect floor when you’re trying to find just the right design for a modern look. Carlisle White Oak flooring is extremely versatile, allowing you to choose the exact style, grade, and color you desire.
When considering the style of your White Oak floor, the first choice you’ll need to make is whether to use Plainsawn or Quartersawn White Oak. The most noticeable difference between the two is the appearance of the grain lines.

Once you’ve chosen the style of White Oak flooring you want, you can select the color. Luckily, there are dozens of colors to choose from to get just the right look. White Oak works exceptionally well with a variety of finishes, ranging from urban gray to sleek black to crisp white, as you can see in the examples below.
Hickory
Hickory flooring is currently one of the most popular in the industry. Carlisle Wide Plank Hickory flooring is made primarily from northern-grown stands, where trees grow more slowly, and features a blend of darker heartwood and lighter sapwood with a very consistent appearance. Hickory also stains quite nicely, so you can use a dark color to create a more modern look.
Walnut
One of the last, but certainly not least, options for a floor with a formal look is the ever-popular Walnut. Due to its naturally dark color, it’s not quite as versatile when it comes to staining as Hickory or White Oak are — both of which start out lighter to begin with.
Carlisle Wide Plank Walnut flooring has a unique and regal look that suits a modern decor perfectly. And while you can’t lighten-up Walnut very much, you can make it darker and create an even more formal appearance. This modern California kitchen did just that for a contemporary design.
