Seaside Home Get a Custom Hickory Floor Fit for the Beach
Wide plank Hickory flooring can take on many “forms”, from light and rustic, to dark and mysterious, or in the case of this Seaside home, light and airy.
We worked with Architect David Mehlin to design a Wide Plank Hickory floor for a private home in Rockport, Massachusetts that Mehlin designed. Builder, Tom Anderson of Rockport, did the installation.
When you see these photos you might be surprised to learn that this is Hickory flooring. Hickory has a bad rap in the industry as being “rustic” with too much unpredictable color variation. The clients chose Carlisle hickory floors because we could mitigate both of those risks. Our high quality Hickory flooring is made from the highest quality Northern Grown hickory which will have more heartwood and less variation, than other Hickory available today. We also custom graded the floor to have even less variation, and knots, to give the client a more modern look.
In addition to Carlisle's grading we also helped the client find a light stain and clear finish combination that woudn't create the golden tone that so many people associate with Hickory. This finish combination creates a light, and airy beachside feel, while still allowing yo to see the natural variation of the wood.
Another common misconception is that you cannot install wide plank floors on the water, Carlisle's All 8″ Wide boards are holding up just fine. While acclimation and installation play a major role in the performance of a wide plank floor, the quality of the wood that is being used will also be a big factor. Our selective harvesting, extended air and kiln drying process, grading, and custom milling all create a more stable floor that is easy to install and performs in a variety of environments.
