Deeply Rooted in the Love of Trees
Imagine you are hovering above the earth with a direct view of the United States…
A collection of colors layer the surface and the mixed textures of mountains and plains create the familiar shape of our beautiful land. It is sprinkled from coast to coast with a multitude of tiny drops in various shades of green, as if Mother Nature peppered the canvas of our country in one sweeping motion.
What you are witnessing is truly a work of art! And these carefully placed leafy hues that have caught your eye can be attributed to the work of the Arbor Day Foundation and over one million supporters who have joined its cause to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees! Over 250 million majestic trees to be exact, blanketing our country and other lands over the last 43 years!
At Carlisle, we are self-proclaimed ‘arboristas’, deeply rooted in the love of trees and dedicated to sustainable forestry and manufacturing practices. In partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation, we are committed to planting 12,000 trees a year through the non-profit organization’s corporate program and take great pride in sharing their story:
Planting the Seed
In 1854, a journalist named J. Sterling Morton and his wife moved to the Nebraska Territory from Detroit. He was extremely passionate about agriculture and found joy in sharing his knowledge in the local paper. His enthusiasm and vision eventually led to a position as the Secretary of the Territory, and the first community-driven Arbor Day, which was held in Nebraska City in 1872.
A century later, the Arbor Day Foundation was created in celebration of what had become known as the “tree planters’ holiday.” With an official platform, it didn’t take long for communities across the country to join in the efforts. Shortly after, Tree City USA was launched as forty-two communities across 15 states were honored for their participation in the planting of trees. Today, there are over 3,300 cities and towns recognized as Tree City USA communities.
Growth That Rings True
In 1989, the Foundation launched their first public service campaign called “Trees for America,” featuring as their spokesperson, the late John Denver. Just a year later, they began their partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters in the wake of the Great Yellowstone Fire. This has led to the planting of over 50 million trees in National, State, and County public forests.
Trees for Good
In recent years, an accelerated program provides new trees to residents recovering from hurricanes and other natural disasters to plant trees lost in the destruction. This not only helps recovery but brings hope and healing to those experiencing loss. In 2015 the Foundation expanded their global reach to 16 different countries in five continents, changing the lives of many who depend on forestry for survival, including the lives of coffee-growing farmers and communities.
Much of the success of the Arbor Day Foundation comes from the 20 plus programs that have been developed to bring people together to make the world cleaner and greener by planting trees where they are needed most. From early elementary education to conservation, energy saving, replanting and reforestation, it’s exciting and easy for everyone to get involved!
Ready, Set, Plant
The official Arbor Day Foundation website has everything you need to get started! Memberships start at only $10 and offer a variety of convenient ways to share the mission. You can learn more about agriculture, official dates of Arbor Day by state, and even shop in the online tree nursery! And don’t forget to check out the collection of tree pride goods and gifts that support the cause! Our favorite is the sustainable coffee that is grown under the canopy of the rainforest!
And if you happen to have the travel bug, we would be remiss if we didn’t tell you that Nebraska City is the home of Lied Lodge and Conference Center along with the Arbor Day Farm. Just another great place to visit and support the cause!
A Sterling Reputation
So, as we at Carlisle continue to craft our own works of art from the world’s finest trees grown right here in New England, we honor the words and wisdom of J. Sterling Morton with every floor we place in homes and businesses across the country and around the world.
