Design Boards: Urban Living

Urban living goes hand in hand with a modern decor.

Today we are featuring a beautiful flat in the heart of the city, with this modern flair!   We think you’ll like the complimentary white and smoky, taupe tones throughout, with the pop of lime-green in some lovely accent pieces and textiles.

Furniture

Modern sectional sofa’s like the one you see here isn’t a new style.  This trend has been around for years.  Wide arms, straight lines and a metal base, all work together to create nicely styled couch for this decor.  The taupe coloration is a perfect complement to the upper kitchen cabinets and island.

We found a nice match from a furniture design company in Minnesota called BluDot.

Next to the island, in a breakfast bar fashion, we have stainless steel bar stools.  You’ll find a PERFECT match with the Tonic Counter Stool from Miami based furniture design company, the Brickell Collection.   Not only is it fashion forward, but it economically price too!

Hidden to the left of the couch, is an equally trendy furniture piece – an accent table made from a wood log.  You might think log furniture like this might only be fitting for a rustic, log cabin, but, not so, as you can see here.   Once the logs are debarked, and polished they make a perfect accent table next to a bed, in an entry, or in this case, next to the couch.

These Teak accent tables from natural products site Vivaterra, are a great fit!

Appliances

It is hard to see all the appliances in this modern kitchen, but we love the one we DO SEE, the double wall oven.  Who doesn’t want one of these – family gatherings just got a lot easier.

Sub-Zero is a great source for modern appliances, and their double oven is no exception.

Wood Floors

When it comes to a beautiful interior, the wood floors you choose can make, or break, the overall design.  If you choose the wrong color you can compromise the overall design.  If you choose floor boards that are too narrow for a modern, open space, it will not match the scale.  It can also take away from the luxurious feel of the room.

The homeowner in this case chose widely with All 10″ wide flooring.  The color was also chosen to complement the smoky tones of the room, with Ash hardwood flooring in Elated Gray, from the Blissful collection.

Decor and Textiles

There are so many decorative accent pieces to choose when you are completely the design of your room – artwork, pillows, blankets, tables, bowls, plants, pottery.  For the decor enthusiast, this is probably the best part!  We had some fun shopping for these items as well!

The designer used the decorative accent pieces to introduce a secondary color into the room – lime green.  You do not see this color in many interiors, but it is a nice contrast to the white and taupe tones, in this room.

These lime green Ikat pillows add nice color and geometric shapes to the room (a trend for 2014 according to the interior design website Decoist).

Toss a simple hand woven blanket on a couch or chair to add color, and allow family members to cozy up on a cold winter day.  The Gwendolyn blanket from Rizzy Home in Georgia is a nice match.  We found it on HayNeedle.

And there is always an opportunity to add some dishware, and pottery to the room, either as standalone pieces or to serve some functional purpose.  In this room we’ve got some on the accent tables and serving as a fruit bowl.   We found some lovely pieces from Ekobo Ecology & Design from UK-Based luxury home furnishings company, Amara.

What is your favorite part of the room? What do you think of the lime green accent color?
