How to Give your Home More Curb Appeal

The hit HGTV show Curb Appeal is a fun, and inspiring reminder of how important the outside of the home is to the overall look, feel and function of your home.  And whether you have a sprawling homestead, with forests, mountains and land aplenty, or a 1/2 acre lot in a big city, you want to make the most of your space.

Today, we will look at two important elements to “curb appeal” – aesthetics and function – and ways to improve on each of them!

Aesthetics

Entryway

Your entryway welcomes you, and your guests into your beautiful home – make the most of it.

Replace your current door, to add a blast of color, let in more light, create a more welcoming entry, or enhance your home with more architectural details.  Choosing the right door is important, and if you do it right, it will last a long time.

Select the type of construction you want for your door, like solid or steel, depending on where you live and your own personal preference. Decide if you want glass in your door, or incorporate glass features on the outside of your door.  You will also be able to hoose your wood type and color, selectin something that will be a natural complement to your home siding and trim. , selec

“Frame your entry” using fencing, arbor, plants, clearly defines walkways and more.  There are a variety of materials that you can use for this.  Trees, flowers and potted plants in a variety of species and colors; wood fencing, iron arbors, and brick walls are just a few elements you can choose from.

Enhance the entry way with architectural details.  This home Curb Appeal home makeover, emphasizes the beautiful entryway with the Portico and arch details, and customized home number sign.

Don’t be afraid to decorate – and we aren’t talking about holiday decorations.

Just because you are outside doesn’t mean you don’t need decor.

Resilient outdoor carpets, artwork, rocks, pottery, furniture, throw pillows, and plants are a great way to dress up the outside of your home.

Shutters/Window Treatment

Installing new shutters is a great way to dress up your home.   In this example, you take a simple two-story family home and make it more visually appealing with the new black shutters.

There are a number of different types of materials to choose from – wood, vinyl, and composite.  Take your time to understand the different material options in terms of benefits and disadvantages.  Low quality wood shutters, for example, can rot quickly and will need replacement.  Vinyl and Composite offers soutions for many different budgets, and less concer about rot.  They also maintain their color longer and wno’t change or fade in color.

When it comes to other accents for your windows, why not consider some beautiful flower boxes, which add detail and colors to your home.

Function

Making sure the outside of your home if functional, is important.  Whether it is for your children’s play area, a special pet, or family gatherings, you can improve the function of your home in many ways.

Organize

Organize your area with clearly defined walkways, seating, and play areas.

Create New Spaces

Create new spaces for seating and relaxation.  What was once a 8×8 yard filled with weeds, can be covered with beautiful decking for a clean, living area.  Now you can enjoy your new space and make it welcoming and comfortable for everyone.

Plant Control

Plants, trees, flowers are a welcome addition to any home.  But you want to remove, trim or relocate excess plants to give yourself more area to move.

Gates

Install a “gate”…one of the most classic ways to define an entryway according to Country Living magazine.

Define Spaces

Create a clear perimeter for your spaces, like in this Curb Appeal makeover, using tiles, decking, fencing, bricks and other elements to transform a small family yard to the ultimate retreat and play area!
