Eastern White Pine Goes Modern in Wisconsin Live/Work Studio

Eastern White Pine is not usually what our clients ask for when they are creating a modern interior.  Carlisle recently worked with architect-led design-build firm, Midwest Modern LLC, on a work/live studio where Eastern White Pine was the perfect choice to create just the right mix of modern and rustic on the floors, ceilings, and walls.

The home was meant to be eco-friendly, efficient, and have a modern rustic balance.

“Rustic, modern LIVE/WORK Studio wholly built with Insulated Concrete Forms. Passive solar design and high performance shell fused with in-floor radiant coupled to geo-thermal. Boldly sited atop a ravine escarpment and capitalizing on breathtaking views over the Wisconsin River valley, this study in opposites is an instant family heirloom.”

Midwest Modern Architect

To create the perfect modern, rustic flooring for this space, the Architect worked with a Carlisle Wide Specialist to design an Eastern White Pine floor.  This style floor is a naturally rustic floor due the knots and character that appear naturally in the floor, and which develops over time as you live on the floor.  It is meant to ding and dent over time.

To put a modern twist on the floor, the Architect chose all 6″ wide boards and a very dark stain – which is common in modern interiors.  It also helped minimize the appearance of the knots.  As you peruse the photos you will notice that the same material was used throughout the ceiling as well.

The wide plank floor was glued directly on concrete. Eastern White Pine is a great choice when installing to concrete due to its flexibility, as a softer wood.

The planks also align with the decking outside and run up the floor-to-ceiling windows to create an edgeless look.

The floor was installed on in-floor radiant heat.  Radiant heat is one of the most efficient heating sources you can use today, and Carlisle is one the only companies that is comfortable having our wide plank floors installed on radiant heat.   The quality of our flooring is such that with proper acclimation, installation and climatization in the home, they will perform and last a lifetime.

Although Eastern White Pine flooring, is known to be a “rustic floor”, you can see how, with the right design, it fits right into this modern home.
