Different Wood Floor Patterns

How different wood floor patterns change a room

Wood floor patterns, or parquet floors, are experiencing a new popularity as homeowners rediscover the elegance and beauty of patterned wood floor designs. Originally installed in the castles and manors of 16th-century Europe, patterned floors still bring a sense of luxury and elevated design to any interior.

Different wood floor patterns bring different energies, style and focus to a room. When choosing a pattern, some homeowners embrace a design that covers an entire floor, while others choose highlights such as borders and dramatic focal points that involve patterns with a more limited scope.

As you consider which of the different wood floor patterns is right for your home, the design specialists at Carlisle Wide Plank Floors can not only help you select the best pattern for each room, but the type of wood, grade, finish, stain and texture that will make your floor a one-of-a-kind expression of your sense of style.

A range of different wood floor patterns

There are virtually an unlimited number of different wood floor patterns to choose from. Any pattern that you can imagine can be realized by the expert craftsman at Carlisle. Three of the most common types of wood floor patterns include Chevron, Herringbone and Versailles.

A Chevron pattern has a zigzag feel. Each board abuts another at an angle, and the ends of each board are cut to create a V-shape pattern that provides a great sense of movement and energy in the room. Herringbone pattern also has a zigzag appearance, but each board adjoins another at a perfect right angle, creating a sense of an overlapping flow. Versailles floors, modeled after floors in the palace of Louis XIV, have a highly intricate pattern with large squares within which floorboards are cut and installed to create a woven appearance.

In addition to these and other different wood floor patterns, you can work with a Carlisle design specialist to create a custom pattern that helps you achieve the exact look and feel you want in order to give your interior more character.

The details on different wood floor patterns

Can patterned floors be made with engineered floorboards?

Engineered floors can easily be installed with a pattern. Carlisle offers two collections of engineered patterned floors – the Manhattan Herringbone Collection and the Studio Herringbone Collection – both of which feature engineered floorboards.

Can patterned floors be prefinished?

Prefinished floors can be fashioned with the same wood plank patterns as a floor that is finished on site. A prefinished parquet floor provides the extra benefit of the ability to protect the floor with stronger sealants which must be applied at manufacturer’s facility. A prefinished floor also lets homeowners skip the mess of finishing a floor on site.

Why choose to install a floor with a pattern?

Hardwood floor layout patterns bring a greater level of visual interest, elegance and sophistication to a surface, making a wood floor a central design feature within the home.

What type of wood is best for different wood floor patterns?

Parquet floors can be made any type of wood, including hardwood, pine or even reclaimed timbers. Different wood floor patterns even use different colors of wood to create a checkerboard effect, for example. And some floors incorporate other materials like marble tiles to create even more visual interest.

What are wood floor patterns?

A wood floor pattern is a design for the layout of wood floorboards. While most hardwood floors are installed in a parallel pattern, where planks are laid out side-by-side, a patterned or parquet floor may employ a more intricate pattern, where boards are laid out at angles or in a puzzle-like design where each piece must be carefully hand-cut and intricately installed. While there are a great number of identifiable wood floor design patterns, many homeowners choose to create a custom pattern that is all their own.
